Mr. Charles Campbell
Gyeongnam International Foreign School
I am delighted to have this opportunity to introduce you to Gyeongnam International Foreign School. Whether you are a prospective parent considering us for the education of your child, or whether you are an existing parent of our institution who seeks more detailed information, I hope our website will provide you with a window into our enriching school life experience.
Gyeongnam International Foreign School is a small, co-educational school in Sacheon, South Korea. With an attractive campus situated in a green, mountainous area in the southern tip of Korea, GIFS provides an international education for the expatriate community living in Sacheon, Geoje Island, and the surrounding area. The GIFS community is warm and friendly and offers the highest standards of pastoral care.
I am proud to say that our school offers a high standard of education. Our curriculum is aligned with the US Common Core State Standards and Cambridge Checkpoint within the inquiry-based International Baccalaureate (IB) Programme, offering the best of international learning. Since we are an official IB World School, we are committed to development of the whole child and emphasis is placed on intellectual, personal, emotional and social growth.
As the School Principal, my own educational philosophy is rooted in Delors’ (1996) four pillars of education for the future:
- Learning to know – mastering learning tools rather than acquisition of structured knowledge.
- Learning to do – equipping people for the types of work needed now and in the future including innovation and adaptation of learning to future work environments.
- Learning to live together, and with others – peacefully resolving conflict, discovering other people and their cultures, fostering community capability, individual competence and capacity, economic resilience, and social inclusion.
- Learning to be – education contributing to a person’s complete development: mind and body, intelligence, sensitivity, aesthetic appreciation and spirituality.
Our small family-type school benefits from outstanding purpose-built and spacious facilities and is staffed by a faculty trained and experienced in the best educational practice. As we are fortunate enough to offer small class sizes, our instruction can be tailored to accommodate individual learning styles and needs and our learners are encouraged to grow in self-confidence and, more than anything else, realise their true potential.
Beyond the realm of academics, our students regularly enjoy field trips that pay homage to the cultural and natural environment of Korea. We are a member of the South Korean Activities Conference (SKAC) that sponsors sports tournaments and academic competition including soccer, basketball, Model U.N., debate, spelling bee, music and fine arts events.
Our students, parents and staff are proud of what this school is providing for the leaders of tomorrow. A website can only convey a particular impression of a school. To extend this sense and experience what makes us special, I personally invite you to come and meet us. I welcome you to meet our students, walk through our classrooms and speak with our teachers. Only then will you appreciate what makes us the ‘best little international school in South Korea’.
