English Language Acquisition Support

English is the main language of instruction and inclusion at Gyeongnam International Foreign School.

The intention of our English Language Acquisition (ELA) program is to provide the language skills necessary to be successful in a general education setting in regard to difficulties that stem from lack of language proficiency.

When students enroll at GIFS, parents are asked to answer questions about their child’s language background. GIFS administration reviews all applications to determine which students will need to take the WIDA Model, an English Language Proficiency test. Upon their arrival at the school, students will meet with the ELA Coordinator who will administer the WIDA Model.

After taking the WIDA Model, students may be placed in the GIFS ELA program, which could include pull-out English Language Acquisition classes throughout the week or push-in in-class support. Students will then take the WIDA Model again at the end of the year to measure their progress. Depending on the student’s language development, they may exit the program at year’s end.
